Starting at $8,500/mo · monthly retainer

Who this is for

Enterprise business unit head or divisional president running a technology transformation.

The pain today

  • A full-time SVP of Engineering is a 9-12 month hire and a $400K+ cost.
  • Internal technical voices are product-focused, not transformation-focused.
  • The program needs executive-level technical counsel for the next 12-18 months.
  • Big consulting firms want $1M+ for what should cost a fraction.

The outcome you get

  • Executive-level technical counsel on a weekly cadence.
  • Architecture review with prioritized remediation.
  • Vendor selection across 3-5 major procurements.
  • Clean handover when a permanent leader is in place.

Scope of engagement

Enterprise fractional CTO engagements at $8,500 a month cover the strategic technical work a BU head or divisional president cannot delegate to a product engineering VP. Architecture review across the program. Vendor selection for major procurements. Technical due diligence on acquisitions or partnerships. Board-ready briefings for the executive sponsor. The scope is written into the SOW and reviewed quarterly. 15-20 hours a week of focused attention, not a weekly sounding board.

Reporting line

Enterprise fractional CTOs usually report to the business unit head, the executive sponsor, or the division president. Not the CIO or CTO of the parent org unless it is a distinct engagement. The reporting line is set in week one and reviewed at each quarterly checkpoint. I do not float across reporting lines. One clear line keeps the decisions clean and the governance unambiguous.

Governance and artifacts

Enterprise engagements run on written artifacts. Monthly engagement report to the sponsor. Quarterly architecture update to the steering committee. Written RFP evaluations for major procurements. Decision logs for every strategic technical call. All artifacts live on your SharePoint or Drive, not on my systems. When the engagement ends, the written record is complete and the permanent leader inherits a documented program.

Confidentiality posture

Enterprise engagements come with sensitive context: M&A targets, competitive strategy, personnel matters. NDA is standard. I do not use engagement details in marketing (case studies are written only when approved). I do not name enterprise clients publicly unless explicitly authorized. The confidentiality posture is why enterprise BUs can bring in a single fractional CTO without anxiety about information leakage.

Frequently asked questions

The questions prospects ask before they book.

Can you work under our enterprise NDA and DPA?
Yes. Standard at this tier. Case study or reference use requires explicit written approval.
Do you attend board meetings?
Steering committee or executive sponsor meetings, yes. Parent board only if explicitly invited and authorized.
Can you help with vendor RFPs?
Yes. Written RFP evaluations, vendor interviews, reference checks, and final recommendations to the sponsor.
What about technical due diligence for M&A?
Yes. I have run technical due diligence for acquisition targets inside the engagement scope. Separate SOW if the diligence is the whole engagement.
What's the typical enterprise engagement length?
12-24 months. Enterprise transformations run on longer clocks than startup engagements.
